Weaning Time
The ram lambs’ cries settle like a somber fog over the farm.
They aren’t frantic, joyous, or demanding. They’re just sad.
We separated them from their mothers.
They are four months old and almost as tall as their mothers. They’re quite capable of surviving on their own.
Yet they still like to get on their knees and contort their heads to nurse. They still want to lie next to their mothers and chew their cuds. They still run to their moms for comfort. They still cry when they can't be near them.
